Now this is a news for the telecom sector. Mobilink is selling off its 26% shares to the UK based telco giant Vodafone. The deal has been in process for quiet some time and recently Orascom, Mobilink's parent company went ahead and agreed on selling 26% shares to the UK telco. This will basically ensure Vodafone an entry in Pakistan which they had been looking forward to for the last three years. Vodafone has already setup their office in Islamabad since 2006 and not many people know about it. After all, it is Mobilink which struck the gold and decided not to stay behind in the race of mergers and acquisitions. Warid has already sold its 30% shares to Singtel and additional 19% will be handed over soon too.
On the other hand, Orascom's Internet wing, Link Dot Net, came into the market and went into trouble due to their weak infrastructure and poor planning. Although people may see it as a success that they acquired a huge number of customer in a short span of time but the inside truth is that their infrastructure is unable to deliver the quality of service they promised. Anyway, now the news is that Orange, another UK based telco, is in negotiations with Orascom to bid for complete buyout of LDN's Pakistan operations. There was also a slight hint of that may be Mobilink might also consider to hand over the BBU (Broadband Unit) which is taking on WiMAX to them as well. Let's wait and see.
I think that it would be wise for Orascom to get rid of the BBU and LDN as early as they can if they are unable to actually realize the dream of becoming a complete communications service provider.

Hey, I was browsing through and read this blog...and this particular post. As someone who is interested in the various telco business ventures (MBA student :P), I was wondering what your sources are for this piece of news? Or is it just something that you heard? I'd be really amused to share it with one of my lecturers, who is always going on about 'Orascom supremacy' lolz.
